The very popular coal reference book 'Queensland Coals', commonly known as the 'Green Book', was last published as the 14th Edition in 2003. The current publication is produced with a grant from ACARP as an expanded reference for Queensland and NSW coals. A format similar to that used for the 'Green Book' is used and the content is particularly oriented to a database of physical and chemical coal properties.

For this Project, Ultra Systems Technology Pty Ltd (UST) teamed with Dick Sanders of Downer EDI Mining QCC (QCC) as the NSW representatives for gathering the required information from NSW sources, as well as follow up efforts.

The coal industry and their support industries rely on accurate and detailed information of coal properties, coal resources and statistics. As part of this resource, the 'Green Book' provided an accurate and detailed database of the properties of Queensland coals. It also provided information on the tenure of coal properties and other relevant information of interest to those with an interest in Queensland coals.

The publication was updated at regular intervals and the last in the series was the 14th Edition, published in 2003. Information was gathered from coal companies who supplied detailed properties of the coals they had an interest in and supporting information was supplied from DNRM; information relating to tenement holdings, mining leases and the like.

Industry and Investment NSW produces a 'Coal Industry Profile' that provides similar information to the Queensland 'Green Book' but without the comprehensive database of coal properties. The 'Coal Industry Profile' provides detailed information on each of the NSW coal operations in terms of resources and production etc, and minimal information on coal properties. It also provides detailed statistics on production, exports, employment etc. Statistics for this publication are provided by Coal Services Pty Ltd, which merged the activities of the former Joint Coal Board and the Mines Rescue Board. Coal Services is the repository of all coal statistics in NSW.

The Qld Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation and Investment NSW have both cooperated in putting the current publication together.
